Abstract

Purpose: The paper aims to perform a systematic literature review (SLR) on enablers and inhibitors of supply chain collaboration (SCC) to provide an up-to-date review. Specifically, it concentrates on antecedents that stimulate successful performance of collaboration within the supply chain (SC), while, also considering constraints of the SCC. This contributes towards the identification of literature gaps to suggest recommendations for future research.

Design/Methodology: Data collection followed predefined criteria developed exclusively for the research, selecting peer-reviewed studies from two to four ranked journals by the Association of Business Schools (ABS). Content and citation analysis were chosen to perform data analysis.

Findings: According to literature collected for the analyses 93 papers identified 21 categories for enablers and 23 papers recognised 18 categories for inhibitors related to SCC. Categories with prevalent recognition in the literature are discussed in more detail. For enablers, these are trust, technological capabilities, information-sharing, incentive alignment and joint decision-making. The categories of inhibitors mainly discussed in the literature are technological capabilities, lack of trust, unwillingness to share information and goals divergence. Gaps identified in the literature were that a majority of studies focus on single industries, there are no explicit descriptions of components of collaboration and there are large publication gaps in relation to inhibitors of SCC.

Originality/Value: The originality of this study derives from an up-to-date content and citation analysis on literature related to SCC which identified and synthesised enablers and inhibitors of SCC into categories. The study also provides contemporary findings and suggestions for future research.
