[Dissertation (University of Nottingham only)]
AbstractThis project has been conducted on the ten weeks work experience at the Staythorpe combined cycle gas turbine power plant, in Staythorpe, Nottinghamshire, UK. The project stems from the need of the power station to know if its oxides of nitrogen (NOx) emissions will be compliant in 2021 when the decree comes into force and the expected limits will be more stringent than the current ones. In fact, the European Committee, with the aim of reducing the harmful emissions of more than 50.000 plants throughout Europe, in 2017 issued a decree that provides for the maximum emission limit to 40 mg/Nm³ (European Commission 2017). In order to predict the future emissions situation, forecasts have been calculated on the basis of the plant historical data. Furthermore, for a complete problem report, a regression was calculated and a cause-effect analysis was made that takes into account all the variables that influence emissions coming out from the gas turbines. To conclude, using Monte Carlo simulations, it was possible to calculate the probabilities of the results provided.
