Abstract

Abstract

People post pictures on Facebook and those in their friends list “Like” them. As an Indian Facebook user, over the years there have been a few unanswered questions. One of which is “Why do some people get more like on their pictures than others”. There are a few people in everyone’s friends list who post simple ordinary pictures and manage to get a lot of likes. There also are those who put pictures that are actually great but end up getting fewer likes.

What influences people to like pictures on Facebook has a slightly complex answer. What factors play a role in it and to what extent is an interesting analysis. There are a lot of factors that influence likes on Facebook than just how the picture is. The discussions and survey conducted revealed what factors influenced these likes and to what extent on Facebook for pictures of men/women of various age groups. There were 3 phases that were part of this research,

• Exploring the factors – Understanding what factors influence likes on Facebook by interacting with 50 people including men and women across various ages ranging from 13 to 68.

• Conducting the survey – Creating a survey sheet with all the factors put into their respective categories. Having the survey sheets filled by 35 women and 39 men.

• Analysing survey results – Creating a database with all the survey results in a format suitable for reporting. Creating charts to analyse all the data in detail.

In general, the top 10 priorities of people are in the order “Great Memories”, “Smile”, “Hair”, “Creative Photography”, “Great Location”, “Dressed Appropriately”, “Like the Person’s Attitude”, “Supporting a Noble Cause”, “Picture Conveys a Message” and “Cute Pictures”.

While It is highly probable that these 10 factors can influence a like on one’s picture, it is important to understand that these can change with other factors like age and gender. Analysis shows that in India, picture preferences of men and women change with age.

In order to get more likes, it would be wrong to conclude on an overall analysis. One must consider various factors like the average age groups of one’s friends circle, how one’s friends like to look at them, attitude and behaviour of the society they live in, etc. Considering a very simple example, lips of women are given a good amount of importance while lips of men are given very little importance.

This study aims to help Indians of various age groups in understanding how they can get more likes on the pictures they post on Facebook.
