Abstract

Gender equality has always been considered as a social issue in India. In a way this has created an unconscious biasness for female at workplace. Women have always been considered as homemakers and have been given a secondary status both at home and workplace. There are also other barriers and gaps that have not allowed women to climb at top-level positions in organisations.

In past years there have been lots of interventions by different government and non-government bodies. The United Kingdom as one of the pioneer countries in bringing gender equality at workplace has had many interventions in this specific area. Recently initiatives such as United Nations Global Compact has enabled in filling the gaps and eradicating the barriers of gender equality at workplace. Also the top companies in the UK have realised it to the core that if they have to be competitive at the market place they need diverse talent at their workplace.

In this study researcher explored best practices regarding gender equality at workplace by Financial Times United Kingdom 2015 top five companies. After analysing the best practices in the UK researcher identified best practices that can be replicated in the Indian context in order to fill the gap through primary data. Researcher identified nine best practices practiced by companies in the United Kingdom and recommended five best practices that can be replicated in the Indian context.
