AbstractThis study provides an analysis of a sector level approach to the institutionalisation and evolution of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). It uses the lens of Institutional Theory to observe the approach of two sectors of the extractive industries - namely Mining & Metals and Oil & Gas. This research creates a conceptual framework that seeks to analyse the role of industry associations in the development and diffusion of CSR within the two sectors. Both sectors are similar in that they are deemed “high impact” in terms of their economic, social and environmental impact, and both have faced high levels of scrutiny and challenges to their legitimacy. However, each sector has taken quite distinct approaches in responding to these issues. This research focuses on the role of industry associations in shaping these responses. In so doing it seeks to identify commonalities, differences and recommended improvements.
