AbstractBanking industry is the backbone of a country economy. Disruption on the stability of this industry may result in economic crises as evidenced by the 1997-98 Asian economic crises and the 2007 sub-prime crisis. While good corporate governance including good business ethics are crucial in maintaining this stability, the role of social responsibility is equally important. Thus, this study will focus on Philanthropic Portfolio in CSR of 8 domestic commercial banks in Malaysia; a specific focus will be given on Strategic Giving initiative. It will adopt a qualitative analysis research approach based on historical content analysis. The primary data is collected from published annual report, journals and newspapers. An attempt will also be made to gather data through executive survey based on best effort basis. The objectives are to identify the pattern of Philanthropic Portfolio, the extent of interconnection between the types of philanthropic portfolio to banks’ core business activities; trend before and after the Bursa Malaysia directive on social reporting; and sophistication of CSR reporting. The findings showed that there exists ‘some form” of Strategic Giving and full-fledged Strategic Giving initiatives undertaken by some banks, and there is trend of systematic CSR reporting.
