Abstract

Executive Summary

The shortening of product life cycle and rapidly changing consumer preferences have promoted the companies to stress on cost control and purchase planning to enhance profitability and market share. The purchasing function in the organisation is being viewed as strategic function. The trend is similar in the automotive industries where the proportion of purchasing cost to operating income is about 50-60 percent. To ensure the purchasing function is aligned with the organization’s long-term goals, the organizations have transitioned from tactical buying to strategic sourcing Strategic sourcing is seen as one of the most important purchasing practices for the future. Strategic sourcing process involves the identification and selection of the supplier whose costs, qualities, technologies, timeliness, dependability, and service best meet the organization’s needs.

Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) is a business built around two great British car brands that design, engineer and manufacture in the UK. The two car brands have rich traditional history in designing distinctive cars which offer a unique blend of style, performance, refinement, prestige and affordability. The company has shown remarkable recovery in FY 2010-11after the global recession and has committed to sustain the positive growth in future. The company has realised the need of integration of strategic sourcing approach in to its purchasing functions and has developed a documentation termed as SCD( Strategic Commodity Dosseir) to assist the buyers in developing strategic thrust for buying commodity(components).

The project report aims to develop a sourcing strategy for commodity (component) camcovers required for the new engine development for JLR. The report intended to explore the concept of strategic sourcing and its usefulness in developing the sourcing strategies. The report highlights the steps in strategic sourcing process and compares the frameworks with the documentation SCD provided by JLR. The report has used the document SCD as a tool to develop the sourcing approach for camcovers. The report also critically acclaims the capability of SCD documentation and suggests some possible improvements.
