Abstract

ABSTRACT

The aims and objectives of this research were to investigate and analyze why a Mediterranean mas tourism destination, Ayia Napa, failed to become an a year-round destination and what could be done in the future to reduce the seasonality problems that occur due to the limited numbers of tourists’ arrivals in the resort during the non-summer months. The first part of the project was mainly about Cyprus and more specifically about Ayia Napa how tourism was developed until today. Additionally in the literature review section a number of issues were mentioned for instance the impacts of seasonality in a tourism destination and the factors that lead into seasonality.

In addition a research was carried out in Ayia Napa by interviewing 106 tourists and eleven local businessmen and residents. The results were analyzed and recommendations were given about how Ayia Napa can reduce seasonality problems during the off peak season. Based on the primary research that was carried out by the research a number of recommendations were suggested. The recommendations focused on organizing festivals, creating sport activities, special tourism facilities like casino and golf courses and the construction of a theme park.
