Abstract

Motivation is a contemporary concept that is widely applied in all organizations. Nonetheless, limited number of motivation research was conducted in the government and semi-government organizations in Malaysia. The primary focus of this dissertation is to study the motivational factors among the employees in Malaysian timber Industry Board (MTIB). This semi-government organization is constituted under the Ministry of Primary Industries in Malaysia. Based on the literature, six main objectives on motivational factors have been outlined for this research. These objectives concentrate on the intrinsic and extrinsic factors, employees’ motivation in different level and departments, leaderships’ perspective on money as the motivator and the importance of leadership towards motivation level. The last objective focuses on the strategies to increase the motivation level in MTIB. Two sets of questionnaires and an in-depth interview were conducted to uncover the motivators according to the objectives. The findings revealed that the motivational factors in MTIB are a combination of both the intrinsic and extrinsic factors. Literatures confirmed the results as both factors deem to be interrelated. In addition, the motivational factors among the departments revealed some differences and similarities. Furthermore, employees mutually agreed that leadership is significant to determine the motivation level among employees. Therefore, MTIB needs to implement the appropriate strategies in order to have a motivated workforce and simultaneously achieve the objectives and goals.
