Abstract

ABSTRACT

This paper seeks to analyse whether animal welfare issues can be one of concerns for Japanese companies to formulate CSR strategy. Today, the subject of animal welfare is becoming one of important global issues since European Union regulates the issues and its regulations are becoming stricter. Japanese companies would face on the issues in the EU and global market. However, since there is distinct public concern for the issues in Japan, it is questionable if and how Japanese companies deal with animal welfare issues as CSR strategy in both global and domestic environments.

This study examines the cases of both Japan and the UK, which has higher concern for the issues. The paper reviews the background and philosophical debate on animal welfare, CSR strategy and its environment, and components in the UK and Japanese nonmarket environments. In the research part, it is analysed a level of public concern for animal welfare as a social interest, corporate performances on CSR concerning animal welfare, and components in the nonmarket environments, which have affected companies to formulate CSR strategy for the issues, in the UK and Japan. Moreover, based on the literature reviews and research, the paper evaluates the questions: how animal welfare issues progress to formulate CSR strategy in the nonmarket life cycle in the case of UK and Japan?, What types of performance for CSR concerning the issues companies in the UK and Japan carry out?, and the main question. It concludes with the question if animal welfare is a dilemma for Japanese CSR with some comments.
