Abstract

Globalisation - phenomena has not spared any firm, as it promises higher gain. Since the last decade multinational corporations all over the world are concerned about their operations affecting the environment, local social life and also exhaustion of natural resources. Hence countries are more concerned about sustainable development. Sustainable development is defined on two aspects: natural environment and social equity. A study based on casual observation conducted (Hamprecht et.al 2005) on Nestle suggested a strong link between customer-supplier and environmental performance. Further dissecting the 2 aspects of sustainable development the following three dimensions can be used:

1. Environmental Performance.

2. Corporate Environmental practices.

3. Social Sustainability.

An MNC is a large network starting from suppliers to customers. Thereby it is difficult to study development in isolation; instead it is necessary to consider the supply chain notion. As stated in an academic research sustainable development cannot be studied in isolation. Hence it necessary to consider the complete supply chain while investigating sustainable development. By using the publically available country-level data such as

1. Global Competitiveness Report published by World Economic Forum.

2. Logistics Performance Index published by World Bank.

3. Environmental Performance Index published by collaboration of 4 institutions.

I propose to develop hypotheses linking supply chain strength, logistics infrastructure and sustainable development at country level. By adopting the methodology followed of Vachon and Mao (2008) the hypotheses will be empirically tested.
