Abstract

ABSTRACT

Making location selection for the operation of products is a complex decision-making process for manufacturing firms since the optimal location could enhance the firms’ competitive advantage and lead to a success in business. In this study, the critical factors affecting foreign firms’ international location decision are explored and aggregated into a comprehensive set of main factors and sub-factors. The results are examined by looking at the group sample of the Hard Disk Drive (HDD) industry and it finds that political and economic situations are the most significant factors for firms to consider when locating their manufacturing facilities in Thailand. In addition, it is suggested that Thailand could regain confidence from foreign investors by restoring peace within the country and providing attractive investment policies through tax structure and tax incentives. As firms seek to locate their manufacturing facilities in a certain area within the country, therefore, the decision model is developed to deal with such a problem. In Thailand, the priority results from the Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) show that the Central region is the best location for locating HDD manufacturing facility, followed by the Northern and the North-Eastern region, respectively. Additionally, the study proposed a decision framework for analyzing a set of critical factors before making final location selections as these factors are considered to be very important factors contributing to the success of HDD industry in Thailand. Moreover, the critical factors affecting location decisions in Thailand which are highlighted from the study can be used at a preliminary stage of decision making process to help foreign firms to gain a better understanding of the range of variables they need to consider in deciding to locate HDD manufacturing facility. This study would hopefully ease the whole process of doing business internationally by reducing time and resources in first screening process.
