Abstract

There is a recent history of airline acquisitions and mergers as the industry has consolidated after several turbulent events outside of its control. During February 2007 Epsilon (a UK based airline) acquired and decided to integrate with Zeta (also a UK based airline). One of the projects related to this integration was the re-branding of the Zeta In-Flight Entertainment (IFE) product. Due to a franchise agreement with Eta (a third UK based airline), the Zeta IFE systems were Eta branded along with the rest of the aircraft's livery and interior decoration. The re-branding of the IFE was one project in a larger programme to remove all traces of the Eta brand from these aircraft and to replace it with the Epsilon brand.

This management project principally reviews the development and installation of the re-branded GUI into the various elements of the Zeta IFE systems in readiness for the integration of the two airlines. Also this management project highlights some of the pitfalls that can be encountered when multiple parties take on a time sensitive project and do not lay adequate ground rules for project management and group communication.

A review of the theories surrounding project management and the management of information systems design projects will be carried out to identify those that were used by instinct and those overlooked in the rush to meet the deadline. This literature review will be used along with the subsequent analysis of the project case study to offer suggestions to Epsilon to help it improve its project management processes for the next occasion such a project is considered.
