Abstract

Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to study the major operations strategies in Chinese textile manufactories based on HUADA and IMILI case studies. In addition, a supply chain partner selection model is introduced in discussion part to evaluate the supplier of IMILI. At the same time, Chinese "Guanxi" factor is discussed by using this model.

Design/methodology/approach: This study applies a descriptive analysis to determine the operations strategies of Chinese based textile and apparel manufacturers.

Primary data is captured from the case companies by personal face to face and telephone interview. External information is obtained from books, journals, internet based data. This study illustrates the competitive priority of the manufacturing strategies in two types of textile and apparel manufacturers with longitudinal description and transverse comparison. The analytical mathematic model - AHP has adopted to measure how important of "Guanxi" issues in process of supply chain partner selection in IMILI.

Findings: As a result of these case studies, it is possible to understand the operations strategy for the case companies, to show the supply chain network, quality management, priority operations strategies and business characteristics.

Practical implications and value: Both the case companies grow globally and domestically. Each type of them has its own special operations strategy to suitable their markets. HUADA should utilize responsive supply network based on its business strategy in a holistic way rather than the buffering order strategy. IMILI on the other hand should more focus on its capacity utilization to reduce the cost and improve its productivity. "Guanxi" issue, transferred from a way for keeping good relationship between either individuals or institutions to a strategic driver for purpose of selecting the suitable suppliers is proposed in the paper. Result tested through AHP has sustained that "Guanxi" do influence IMILI's supplier selection based on the cluster scores.
