Abstract

Previous research about university-industry collaborations mainly concentrated on the USA and European countries but not on developing countries. The aim of this study is to examine the current university-industry collaboration in biotechnology in China.

This study will focus on why universities and biotechnology firms are willing to collaborate with each other and how these two parties achieve collaboration, the emerging problems when collaborations occur between universities and the biotechnology industry in China and how China could improve this collaboration.

The interviewees involved in this study were selected from leading biotechnology firms and universities in China. The research findings are almost consistent with those in the literature, apart from two unexpected findings. The first refers to the post-doctor mobile stations model and the second involves the role of intermediate service institutions in the national innovation system. This study discloses that the university-industry collaboration models developed from developed countries could almost be applied to Chinese university-industry collaborations under Chinese conditions. It concludes that establishing collaboration between universities and industry, reinforcing the regulation and control of government, improving legislative mechanisms and strengthening the development of intermediate service institutions would make significant contributions to achievement transformation, the technology innovation of enterprises and the national technology advancement of China
