Abstract

This research explores competency in the UK general insurance market by using different measures of competency. The study uses different product lines from the UK general insurance markets from 2000 to 2004. The basic methodologies used in this study are Herfindhal index, 5 and 8 firm's concentration ratio.

The competency levels differ to different products lines within the same market. Unlike the other markets the capital base and solvency margins of the companies decide a crucial role in deciding the concentration ratio in the insurance markets and hence the competition. So net premium is a good indicator of measuring competencies in the insurance markets.

This research recommends having future studies by considering premiums from more number of years and using new methods for measuring competencies like Boone indicator.
