Abstract

The aim of this study is to present precedent and contemporary social network research as a valuable tool in the process of researching internal organisational relationships as well as those between actors within the organisation and external stakeholders. Personal and professional relationships are the foundation of social network theory and hence importance has increasingly been attributed to the study of those networks taking into account a vast array of underlying norms and values affecting the life-cycle of alternate network structures. The relative notion of tie strength between actors in, and between networks, impacts on an organisation's culture and economic performance. As a result this study considers networks on an intra- and inter-firm level and relates particular findings to a potential need for managerial input and strategic direction with regard to the active promotion and fostering of those relational networks.

In order to facilitate the understanding of social network theory, recent and current literature has been reviewed and broken down in order to support the identification of valuable and appropriate material with regard to the objective of this study. The use of a case study in a small sized organisation involved a number of participants which were selected in order to gain a representative example of the particular research domain. The practical research involved an ethnographic approach employing a number of semi-structured interviews which unfolded critical views in the social networks in and between organisations.

The research findings were related to the relevant sections of the vast literature present in this field. Subsequently any particular intra- and inter-firm detail was used to identify underlying values which would provide material for a further analysis along the horizon of managerial strategic direction and the resulting inter-firm embeddedness highlighted through the use of a case study.
