Abstract

Outsourcing has become an important issue for many organizations; the potential of outsourcing has moved to critical activities such as design and manufacturing as it offers wide range solutions like streamlining of process, cost reduction of a wide of variety of business process within manufacturing industry. Outsourcing may be seen as a logical response to changing communications technologies, shifting the balance of cost advantage between hierarchies and markets, the decisions are taken within a thoroughly strategic perspective with many firms by either motivated primarily by short-term cost reduction or adopting long-term competitive advantage perspective.

Multinational corporations are increasingly engaged in transferring their supply chain practice across countries. Along with China's important role in the global economy and trade affairs, offshore outsourcing to China has become an inevitable trend. However, this whole domain of transferability of operations and activities is littered with uncertainties and many firms are unable to contextualise and run their operations efficiently. This paper sets out the scope, proposed objectives and initial research of information for understanding the potential synergies in manufacturing supply chains in the context of offshore outsourcing from the UK to China and Taiwan to China.
