Abstract

ABSTRACT

CSR and supply chain issues are complex and the interaction companies have with their stakeholders such as suppliers is fraught with risk, including the risk of reputational damage.

The purpose of this study is to critically examine, from a corporate social responsibility (CSR) perspective, the supply chain risk management system of Barclays Bank PLC, UK focussing on its newly developed supplier self-assessment tool-kit. The objective is to evaluate this risk-based supply chain management tool as to its effectiveness and appropriateness in the United Kingdom and its applicability overseas.

The study proceeds from a general review of CSR and its relationship with supply chain and determines the methodological challenges of assessing CSR risk management in the supply chain. From the literature review and some consultations, the most desirable characteristics of such a tool has been identified and a framework of analysis developed. These characteristics in terms of effectiveness and worthiness include ease of use, flexibility, continuous improvement, focus, transparency, and accessibility. Other important features to take into account are the country risk profile and support schemes such as training and awareness-raising schemes.

The conclusions drawn from the analysis are that the country risk profile and societal governance, in particular transparency and compliance at the national level constitute the success factors and determine the choice of the most appropriate approach to adopt.

A number of specific suggestions have been made and the study concludes by recommending to the company on the one hand an integrated approach of using its CSR-related instruments for a better and on the other hand the need for further research and application in this embryonic area.
