Abstract

In this thesis, an extensive research on radio wave propagation and modeling in caves environment for cave rescue operation, military surveillance communication networks is undertaken. In this research study, a series of measurement work was conducted in different types of tourist caves and uneven terrains, to investigate the effects of radio wave propagation through cave passages. The path loss in the cave passage for near-ground communication systems, can be empirically modeled using well-known indoor propagation models with the ground reflection taken into application.

The research work carried on by investigating the rough surface scattering and propagation over uneven terrain in the cave environment. It is observed that high frequency signal tends to get more attenuated due to the presence of uneven terrain models over the passage. Therefore, a new model ray tracing with scattering factor is proposed. This model is validated using both measured data and some existing simulation data. In this research, for short-range cave propagation loss modeling at VHF, SHF and milli-meter wave bands, wellknown via path loss models taking into account both the multipath reflection and the scattering from rough surface is optimal for path loss prediction.

This thesis investigates the cave propagation paths using measurement results. The different dominant propagation components at varying cave passages are considered and ray tracing models are proposed based on the scattering effects. The roughness of wall surfaces on the propagation signal is also examined. The significance of this research lays a groundwork for further analysis to be conducted in actual cave environment, since the ground surface inside cave is absolutely uneven.

The research work continues by studying the human blockage effect in a pedestrian tunnel. It was found that there are deep fading due to the presence of pedestrian in a tunnel.
