Abstract

With increased need for high power density, high efficiency and high temperature capabilities in Aerospace and Automotive applications, Integrated Motor Drives (IMD) offer a potential solution. . A number of IMD configurations already exist, each with their respective merits, drawbacks and industrial applications. Despite these potential benefits of IMDs, thermo-mechanical concerns remain over the close coupling integration of the power module and machine

This thesis presents a novel end winding mount Integrated Motor Drive. CFD simulations are performed for thermal analysis of the proposed concept and investigation of the effects of the cooling systems in IMDs. The thermal, mechanical and electrical effects of close coupling integration are investigated and solutions proposed. The design and manufacture of a working End Winding mount IMD prototype is also described with particular attention to the thermal effects and temperature distribution in the manufactured prototype.
