Abstract

The objective of the paper is to assess to what extent have macroeconomic, outward orientation and government indicators affected Gross Domestic Product per capita in Estonia. The period observed starts in 1999, 5 years before Estonia’s accession to the European Union, and ends in 2016, 5 years after Estonia’s accession to the European Monetary Union to be able to capture effects resulting from European Integration. To what extent has each variable affected economic growth will be found by performing an Ordinary least squares regression. The dependent variable, GDP per capita, has been used as a proxy for economic growth in the country while independent variables have been selected to capture different aspects affecting growth in the Estonian economy. The independent variables falling into the macroeconomic indicators category are World GDP per capita, unemployment, inflation and government debt. Variables that address outward orientation are foreign direct investment, trade openness and EU/World export ratio while government indicators are captured by the capital formation and government expenditure variables. From the empirical analysis, we can conclude that an increase in World GDP per capita and EU relative to World export has the greatest positive impact on growth while an increase in inflation and government debt has the greatest negative impact.
