Abstract

Workplace flexibility has become an upcoming requirement for most employees. It is viewed as the need of the hour, given the changed dynamics of the corporate world. Employees have increasingly put great importance to flexible working arrangements being introduced at their workplace. It may either positively or negatively impact an employee’s motivation and job satisfaction. Workplace flexible arrangements, as many authors argue, effectively offer employees the autonomy to make valuable workplace decisions, freedom to schedule their work day according to their personal preferences and the choice of taking meaningful breaks. It also increases their productivity. Additionally, workplace flexibility enables employees to maintain an acceptable work-life balance and may also reduce their work-stress.

Given this background, this research aims to first study works of literature in greater depth. Second, the main objective of this research is to understand the impact of workplace flexibility on motivation and job satisfaction by also understanding the importance of work-life balance and work-stress and how flexible working arrangements affect it. This study aims to gain insight on how employees based in the financial capital of India perceive the provision of workplace flexible arrangements. To study the said subject matter, a qualitative research strategy was used and 10 employees working in the corporate sector were interviewed using a semi-structured interview design.

The data collected through these interviews was analyzed using thematic analysis. Five broad themes of work productivity, personal benefits, work-related stress, work communication and work-family balance were constructed to analyze the interviewee’s experiences and opinions. This research found out that when workplace flexibility offers increased productivity, work-family balance, personal growth and development, communication and interpersonal relationships, and decreased work-related stress, it positively impacts an employee’s motivation and job satisfaction.
