Abstract

This study focuses on mentoring outcomes and on the effective

management of a mentoring programme, at a British university. The

purpose of this study is to explore the extent to which a formal mentoring

programme has enhanced the learning of Year 4 Master of Pharmacy

students. This paper brings together the perspectives of both the mentors

and the mentees, to obtain a comprehensive account on achieved learning

outcomes, and barriers to learning, ultimately leading to a set of tailored

recommendations for changes at managerial level.

In order to explore the above issues, this study takes a pragmatic approach

to research, making use of both qualitative and quantitative tools to collect

empirical evidence. 5 mentors were therefore gathered to a qualitative focus

group, and 53 mentees completed a mixed questionnaire.

This study has found that the mentors’ academic backgrounds, their varying

skill sets, and the programme leaders’ failure to meet the individuals’

training needs, has led to a disproportional enhancement of learning

amongst the mentee groups. It was recommended that the programme

leaders take a number of initiatives to adapt to the needs of those involved.

In this way, this paper will aid the work of practitioners.
