Abstract

This paper explores the experiences of the author and other tutors of reflective student-focused meetings in a specialist Further Education college. Through qualitative, semi-structured interviews the researcher aimed to reflexively investigate as an insider how these meetings might facilitate the expression of emotions and the development of empathy. This paper argues that whilst the expression of emotions is important for the well-being and efficacy of teachers, its effectiveness can be influenced by issues of power, control and gender. The importance of empathy as a guiding principle in teaching complex students is challenged, with greater emphasis being placed on making rational, strategic decisions. The paper highlights as areas for further research the effect of hegemonic masculinity on male teachers’ expectations and experiences of empathy, and effective models for encouraging teachers’ emotional talk untainted by fear of repercussions.
