Abstract

This dissertation is focussed on investigating whether teaching TESOL (Teaching English to

Speakers of Other Languages) in the UK can be regarded as a career. Through an

extensive review of literature, and the interviews of four UK based TESOL teachers, several

themes relating to this topic emerged and are discussed. This dissertation concludes that

TESOL teaching can be regarded as a career and that the current working conditions and

opportunities for TESOL teachers in the UK conform to the definition of a career outlined in

the literature. This dissertation also offers some recommendations for practice and further

research into the area.
