Abstract

There has been an abundance of research collated on the topic of domestic violence; however there has rarely been any addressing of issues relating to honour-based violence (HBV). The study will investigate the points of view of women who have been subjected to honour-based violence and how they live with the effects of their longstanding trauma.

A qualitative interview approach of interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA) was utilised, to establish accounts from survivors of honour based violence. Interviews were conducted with six females identifying as South Asian within the Sikh and Muslim faith. All the women experienced HBV in their early teens and now are within the age range of thirty-two to sixty two

The results showed participants identified that they felt their focus in life was for wider society rather than living for their own inner peace and happiness. The study looked at the long-term traumatic impact on the survivors. The study also highlighted a lack of awareness about HBV within participants, their community and also professionals.

Recommendations are made for professionals to help them identify the signs of honour-based violence and inform much needed awareness education within the community.
