Abstract

Because of the retirement issues and shrinking generations, the influence of Generation Y employees in China is becoming increasingly significant. Consequently, it is essential to examine the effective motivational drivers of Generation Y employees in China in order to engage and support them more effectively in their companies and organizations. The first purpose of this study is to examine the factors that will decrease the motivation and satisfaction of Chinese employees of Generation Y towards jobs. Second purpose is to identify the effective rewards that can motivate Generation Y. The third purpose is to examine the factors that will influence the retention of Chinese employees of Generation Y.

By adopting the in-depth interview as the qualitative research method, the author interviewed 12 Chinese employees of Generation Y that came from three different types of company.

The study found that although financial rewards can improve Generation Y employees’ satisfaction towards jobs to some extent, some non-financial rewards such as recognition tend to be more effective on motivating them. In other words, the essential of motivating Generation Y employees in China is to improve and modify organization’s system so as to satisfy their growing needs of self-improvement and self-actualization as well as work-life balance.
