Regional Integration of Southeast Asia: A Case Study on ASEANTools Chiew, Ze Yang (2016) Regional Integration of Southeast Asia: A Case Study on ASEAN. [Dissertation (University of Nottingham only)]
AbstractRegional integration has been seen as an effort to foster economic growth. The European Union set a benchmark and often perceived as the leading role of integration model. While different continents aim to establish a common market to facilitate growth, we have observed that the Southeast Asia region has been working on a unique model for the past five decades. The ASEAN way focuses on minimalist institutionalism and consensus decision-making. Our research intended to appreciate the dissimilarity of the ASEAN model as compared to other regional organisations. We conducted our study by understanding the intra-regional trade in Southeast Asia, economic performance of the ten member states and explore the environmental, social and governance (ESG) issues in the region. The study emphasized that ASEAN has to continue attract capital expenditure growth and building a sense of community among the members to achieve the single market of ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) by 2025.
