Abstract

Environmental issues have become increasingly significant, not only for policy maker but also for business, consumers and stakeholders. These issues are arising due to the increasing number of environmental problems like soil degradation, ozone layer depletion, water and air pollution, the reduction in the availability of fresh air and water and the scarcity of natural resources. One of the most highlighted causes of these environmental problems is consumption activities. In Indonesia, 2 of major environmental problems caused by consumption activities are pollution and water pollution. To overcome these problems, an active contribution and participation from the citizen and consumers are needed. One of the proposed concept in handling environmental problems by involving consumers’ participation is sustainable consumption. It is suggested that consumers can contribute a significant impact in sustainable development through their choices and behaviors as the purchasers and main end-users. However, they need help and influence to perform the sustainable behavior. This study tries to discover what can encourage sustainable consumption behavior in the context of Indonesian young adults. A quantitative research method is administered to investigate this issue in order to obtain a deeper understanding. The method employed to test the proposition in this studies are t-test and regression analysis. As for tools of data processing, this study used SPSS 16.The result of this study concluded that functional value, epistamic value, environmental knowledge are the factors that can predict sustainable consumption behavior of Indonesian Young Adults
