Abstract

China's unprecedented economic growth, that has made the country an Economic Superpower, has attracted the attention of other under developed countries that are seeking to emulate China's development model. At this juncture, it is imperative to understand the positive and negative impacts of the model in the socio-economic context. This paper analyses the structural and industrial changes in the last three decades of China's development, taking the three important elements – SEZ, FDI and Trade for study. Rostow's development model is used as the base and China's different growth phases are mapped against each development stage. At each stage, changes in policies and their implications are highlighted with the help of industrial data and macroeconomic indicators. After presenting the pros and cons of the development model, this thesis suggests a balanced approach of development for developing nations and way forward for China's sustainable growth.
