Abstract

The effects of globalization now reach every corner of the world, sooner or later indigenous firms are forced to face competitions at home market, without going abroad to feel the impact. The cross border business expansion no longer involves just the multinational corporations but also many small and medium size enterprises (SMEs). This thesis illustrates how indigenous SMEs can form and manage an alliance with foreign partners in order stay competitive in home markets or abroad in the international arena. By using an alliance formation conceptual framework; the findings from fives Malaysian SMEs from different industries evidenced some common practices in strategic alliance, in terms of to do’s and not to do’s. It also highlights the importance attributes for increasing the chances of successful alliance, with evidence from the few SMEs in the cases whom have achieved certain level of success in their respective industry from the strategic alliance perspective.
