Abstract

The study aims to investigate dimensions of CSR activities of firms listed in Bursa Malaysia and to study the relationship between dimensions of CSR activities and the firms’ ratings from the investor community. Fifty (50) firms from various sectors such as finance, plantation, gaming/entertainment, consumer, construction, property, industrial products and tilities/infrastructure are selected for this study. It was observed that Malaysian firms seem to emphasis more on community dimension of CSR initiatives to be undertaken. The workplace and environment dimensions of CSR activities also seem to have relatively more attention from firms and shown an increase in disclosure in annual report. As for marketplace dimension, the finance and consumer sector have the most robust mechanisms to manage various stakeholders’ expectations. The findings have shown significant correlation relationships between dimensions of CSR activities such as workplace, marketplace, community and environment with the firms’ ratings i.e. P/E and P/B ratios from investor community except EV/EBITDA ratio. Further analysis using regression indicate the following: the forward investors’ ratings (based on forecast earnings) such as P/E and P/B of FY09 and FY08 show a significant linear relationship with CSR dimensions (especially community and other CSR communications / awards received dimensions) and total CSR scores, this suggests that firms’ CSR activities contribute significantly in predicting investors’ ratings on firms.
