Abstract

This study examines the impact of team stability, the generation of tacit knowledge (at the player level and the captain’s level), and team diversity on team performance. This was done using a panel of eighteen cricket teams over a period of four years from the English County Championship. Findings show that first, there is a negative association between team instability and team performance. Second, there is a positive relationship between player shared experience and team performance. Third, there is predominantly no relationship between a captain’s shared experience with his players and team performance. Fourth, bio-demographic diversity variables were found to be unrelated to team performance. Finally, task-related diversity variables are largely found to be negatively associated with team performance, although there are some instances of positive effects. Overall, these results tend to challenge certain popular concepts held by researchers of these aspects in the team literature, especially with regards to team diversity.
