Abstract

As organisations, at one time or another, must go through organisational change to improve performance in order to respond to changing environments, managing change has become an inevitable part of organisational life. While past literature includes both the planned and emergent approaches to change, the planned approach that has been more congruent with the Anglo-American culture is given more prominence. However, recent failings of the Anglo-American approach have increased calls for an alternative in the form of the European or emergent approach. The theories and models under each approach formulated by past researchers are analysed, accompanied by three success cases of European companies and comparisons with Lufthansa. The analysis of Lufthansa’s change management process reveals that both change approaches can work together instead of just on its own to achieve transformation success; however, organisations must carefully choose their change approach with respect to the external, internal, and temporal environments.
