Abstract

While there exists a wealth of information relating to entrepreneurship, start-ups, small business operations and management buy-outs, little has been specifically written in relation to small insurance operations. Lloyd's and the London Market have traditionally been seen as forward thinking and entrepreneurial, yet small insurance organisations outside of London are rarely covered by insurance literature.

The UK insurance market, and the majority of academic insurance research, is dominated by large organisations. This dissertation looks at entrepreneurship in the context of smaller insurance organisations, using one former Lloyd's Motor insurance Syndicate as a case study, with reference to other organisations of similar size.

Chapter 2 provides an overview of the United Kingdom general insurance market, with specific reference to motor insurance. Overviews of Lloyd's of London, reinsurance and offshore markets are also included as reference is made to them throughout. Chapter 3 reviews the literature available relating to start-ups, entrepreneurship and management buy-outs.

Chapter 4 details the approach used in researching smaller organisations, with Chapter 5 detailing the findings from interviews and research in relation to selected smaller insurance organisations, presented primarily as a case study of one of these. Chapter 6 goes on to draw conclusions from the literature combined with the research findings, and what the company in the case study tells us about entrepreneurship. The final chapter provides an overall conclusion.
