Abstract

PMBOK framework was one of the more popular project management frameworks in the project management society in handling different types of projects. The detailed nature and extensive coverage of the framework allow it to be able to handle different types of projects. However, the framework serves as a hindrance to small-scale CapEx projects in manufacturing sector. The reason for the hindrance was due to the limited resources in small-scale project in handling huge amount of PMBOK deliverable. The project team would be required to spend unnecessary time to meet the framework requirements. A mix-methods methodology comprising of explanatory sequential design analysis, qualitative questionnaire, quantitative interview to the targeted personnel was conducted

As such, a new 5 steps simplified project management framework was introduced to handle small-scale CapEx project. The framework was incorporated with lean sigma concept, targeted to eliminate waste and error. The new framework achieved 10% of total cost reduction coupled with 80% of time reduction in handling the project documentation work in new CapEx project. The continuous improvement concepts in the framework also bring about project cost avoidance, positive relationship building with the customer and uplifting in the team’s moral. The project knowledge retention aspect allows project knowledge to be captured and transferred for future use. Finally, this research provided a new project management framework in handling small CapEx project in manufacturing sector to improve the project performance despite the constraint of limited resource.
