Abstract

Purpose – The purposes of the study are 1) to identify the main financial constraint of SMEs in China from the perspective of institutional theory and 2) to examine the effects of financial constraints on the export performance of SMEs in China. Design/methodology/approach – Case study is employed as the research design of this paper and the author collects data through documents including journal articles and the annual report on Chinese SMEs, and the interview of L company, a Chinese SME.

Findings – It was found that 1) poor access to bank loans is the main financial constraint for most Chinese SMEs, though a small part of SMEs obtains low-interest loans from banks and 2) financial constraints would hamper the exports of Chinese SMEs, leading to a decrease in export volumes and export product variety. Originality/value – A large strand of literature on the internationalization of large corporations and SME internationalization in developed countries, while knowledge of the export of SMEs in emerging countries is limited such as China. Lack of funds is a salient problem facing Chinese SMEs and discourages their export performance strongly but receives scant attention. We thus make the contribution to fill the gap by focusing on the export of Chinese SMEs and the effects of financial constraints on their export performance; methods of documents and an interview are used in this paper which are different from most studies employing a database to examine the financial constraints-export relationship; findings in this paper have practical implications to the management of banks and governments.
