Abstract

Within this dissertation, I have researched the role the lack of information plays within the United States collegiate system, and therefore how much of an impact this asymmetric information has on both the performance and the well-being of the Student-Athlete as a whole.

The purpose of this dissertation is simply to shed light on the challenges these Student-Athletes have in regards to placement within colleges in the United States, and to show that although the experience for thousands is overwhelmingly positive in regards to the playing level, facilities and professionalism, many others are left with completely different experiences. By researching the literature related to asymmetric information, this research attempts to begin to explore the role it plays within a sporting setting, where this is limited amount of research done and also explores avenues of potential further research.

Each of the ten subjects within the research were interviewed and asked to discuss their experiences within the United States – both upon arrival, and before arrival in regards to the agents or agencies they worked with, or the universities that they worked with and how they felt about the whole process. Each of these individuals were uniquely different and allows for a greater breadth of research. They differ in age, gender, location within the United Kingdom, location within the United States upon arrival, sports played, agencies used and also the year they went out on the Sports Scholarship.

The findings showed that asymmetric information did indeed play a role within the decisions of the Student-Athletes which in many cases led to difficult situations one way or another, concluding that there does need to be something done in regards to the morality or the ethical guidelines that agents or agencies work under in order to stop this from happening so frequently. This means that the implications of this study should not only shed light on the matter at hand, but encourage further research to be done on this topic or enable prospective Student-Athletes to ask more questions before committing to this process.
