Abstract

The purpose of this research is to deduce an overall picture of development of quality management in India, especially the position of ISO in SMEs in India. This dissertation presents the results of an investigation of implementation of ISO 9000 in a SME in India. The observations and discussions made through this study can be referred by SMEs and large scale organisations during the process of decision making for implementation of ISO to know beforehand several problems that could arise during the process of ISO implementation and its maintenance and take preventive measures.

The study was carried out in two phases. The first phase involved developing a background for the study followed by a literature review of existing works in the field of quality management in India and other developing countries and ISO in India. The second phase involved an investigation of implementation of ISO 9000 in a case study company in India. The investigation in the company began with a comprehensive check of all the ISO related documents maintained by the company. Further, semi structured interviews were conducted with the top management, middle management and the ISO consultant of the company. Observations made from the documentation check and semi structured interviews were combined and analysed to draw conclusions.

The results from the investigation points out different snags that an SME have to face in developing countries like India during their initial steps towards TQM. The study identifies a few shortcomings from the part of the case study company and other broader issues that surround an organisation which affects the quality movement of an organisation, and makes suggestions to solve these issues.
