Abstract

Background: The companies involved for the purpose of improving their respective market standings and income executes mergers. It is interesting how this merger & acquisition phenomena continue to attract many organizations across different sectors of the business world. The mergers & acquisition culture around the globe provides an ideal scenario to investigate into the healthcare industry which comprises of pharmaceutical and biotech companies and the impact of the mergers on the firms involved. This study seeks to explore the motives behind takeovers and also the most suitable form of organizational integration in great detail.

Methodology: A mixture of both qualitative and quantitative research approaches have been utilized for this project. The researcher has followed a systematic method of collecting, analyzing and interpreting data. The data used for the purpose of this dissertation has been largely secondary data. Case study analysis of two deals has been done to see whether they have benefited from the merger. Various financial instruments of companies have been extracted by using the ‘Factset fundamentals’ in order to calculate the necessary ratios which would help in analyzing. The results obtained through analyzing the pre and post merger impact of the mergers and acquisition on the respective companies has been interpreted using appropriate graphs and charts.

Results: Mergers and acquisitions being the main strategic tool for growth of companies, this dissertations aims at evaluating whether value has been added or destroyed by the activity of mergers.
