Abstract

This report sets out to explore stakeholder engagement as currently practised in social enterprises in Nottingham City. The literature displays confusion about many of the characteristics of social enterprise, but there is overwhelming consensus that social enterprises are built on stakeholder engagement.

Given the debate about definitions of and this expectation of stakeholder involvement in Social Enterprise, this report addresses the following questions in the context of three social enterprises in Nottingham:

How do organisations that are viewed as social enterprises define themselves?

How do they engage with their stakeholders?

How could they improve their stakeholder engagement?

Conclusions are drawn about the need to define with precision and clarity the terms social enterprise, trading and stakeholder engagement. All three of the organisations studied exhibited good practices in stakeholder engagement, and recommendations are made to improve this further.
