Matrix converters have received continued research attention as a result of their possibility of higher power density, controllable input power factor, and removal of DC-Link component. However due to the numerous semiconductor power switches used in such circuits there is a high possibility of switch failures.

This thesis considers both the direct matrix converter (DMC) topology and the indirect matrix converter (IMC) topology. The DMC and IMC system behaviour under an open circuit switch fault condition is investigated and given in detail with the aim of contributing more expert knowledge to a fault diagnosis method for a DMC or IMC system. The expert knowledge can effectively avoid false diagnosis in DMC and IMC systems. Several expert-knowledge-based fault diagnosis methods are developed in this thesis to diagnose open circuit switch faults in DMC system and IMC system with finite-control-set model-predictive-control (FCS-MPC) strategy or space vector modulation (SVM) strategy. An experimental prototype of the DMC has been built to validate the proposed fault diagnosis methods.
