Abstract

Non-adherence to medical treatment is the current worldwide problem that may result in the poor treatment result and unnecessary medical system expenditure. In essence, numerous medication adherence interventions have been designed and proved to improve the adherence efficiently. However, rare articles focus on the combination of these current interventions and the strategic planning from the business perspective. On the other hand, the pharmaceutical companies have been criticized for their profit-oriented strategy. The firms are facing the contradiction between profitability and cooperate social responsibility. Therefore, it forces them to change their promotional strategy from profit-oriented planning to patient-oriented planning. This dissertation aims to provide the pharmaceutical managers the flowchart for patient oriented planning that takes into account of both the patient related factors and business operational factors.

For making the patient-oriented strategy, it is necessary to realize the concept of patient oriented treatment and the root causes of non-adherence. The documentary research method is used to provide the knowledge across several research territories.

The reasons for non-adherence include the internal factors and external factors. The internal factors contain the patient characteristics like education level, age, culture, region, etc. The external factors contain the support from family, the relationship with physician and nurse, the accessibility of medical service, the side effects of therapeutic regimen, etc. Moreover, the advantages and limitations of current adherence interventions are also discussed. It facilitates the pharmaceutical firms to adopt the suitable interventions and to invest in the right patient groups. The 8-step flowchart of planning is made by the integration the current theoretical materials, which provides the new model for the pharmaceutical managers to make the patient-oriented strategy covering both patient perspectives and business perspectives.

The contribution of this dissertation is to create the profitable strategy model that the needs of all stakeholders in the medical environment are concerned. It would also encourage the pharmaceutical companies to invest more resources in the medication adherence issue. Once the problem of non-adherence could be decreased, the financial burden of national medical care is also alleviated.
