Abstract

Innovation contest has been identified as an effective tool of open innovation used mostly by manufacturing and service development companies. This tool calls out to external solvers to submit ideas potentially capable of solving specified research and development problems. This method has recently been applied to social innovation to solve pressing and emerging social problems. This application of innovation contest to social innovation, that is, social innovation contests have yielded effective result.

Extant literature have mostly focused on solvers’ motivation for participating in social innovation contests and how the conduct of such contests influence behaviour during the contests, but are yet to present findings with respect to factors that influence the decision to participate, conduct and particularly consequences of social innovation contests. Putting into consideration that the nature of social innovation contests are quite different from that of product and service development competitions, this research, using the Ingenuity Prize Competition as a case study, therefore contributes to the body of knowledge by presenting findings on the factors that influence the decision to participate, provide an understanding of how the conduct of the innovation contests influence participants’ willingness and behaviour in the course of the competition and the possible outcomes of participating in social innovation contests.
