Abstract

In terms of the effect of Chinese culture on HRM of MNCs in China, a large amount of existing literature focuses on the negative aspects. On the basis of assuming that the advantages of Chinese culture can be integrated into HRM practices. This dissertation explores how some of Chinese traditional values play a positive role on Chinese employees' motivation and retention. These effects may be not possible achieved by classic Western HRM models and theories.

The investigation of this study is based on a qualitative research, in which 18 semi-structured telephone interviews were conducted with employees in one of the largest MNCs in China, namely P&G. According to the interview findings and previous academic literatures, the study indicates that harmonious work environment is essential important to Chinese employees and reciprocal relationship is an effective way to increase the employees' long-term commitment. If the MNC can develop Chinese style human resource motivation and retention as the unique competitive advantages, the image and reputation of the company will be enhanced to a large extent.

As more and more foreign MNCs develop their business in the Chinese market, it is essential for foreign MNCs to note that only when they adapt their HRM practices to fit the Chinese context, the human resource can be managed effectively and successfully in China.
