Abstract

The objective of this dissertation/management project was to research and provide a quantified and qualitative understanding of the funding opportunities for innovative research and consultancy projects offered by the UK Government in the context of Scott Wilson Research Consultancy and generate possible courses of action.

The environmental analysis confirmed that the funding opportunities for innovative research offered by the UK Government are enormous, both in terms of the amount and scope. The UK Government on a whole, although restricting spending in some areas, appears to be investing large sums of money in the majority of Scott Wilson's key market areas. A review of the various Government Departments, Agencies and Quangos indicate that an increasingly important area for research is that of the environment and its sustainability which impacts on all the areas within which Scott Wilson-Research Consultancy provides services.

The environmental analysis also confirmed that, for the foreseeable future, the services of research consultants will be in ever greater demand. Moreover, research consultants with a focus on niche markets have increased significantly and research indicates they are set to continue doing well.

Research indicates that the research consultancy industry is highly competitive although somewhat fragmented and it could be said that no clear leader exists although there are a number of large players offering an integrated service. Therefore, as a result of the possibilities that exist within this area, the potential for more new entrants exists.

The analysis also confirmed that the current environment provides a significant opportunity for Scott Wilson Research Consultancy. Also, that they (the Research Consultancy Division) will need to attain a brand presence which is separate from the Scott Wilson Group on a whole, necessitating a dedicated marketing plan.

An opportunity exists for Scott Wilson Research Consultancy to position itself as a research leader within the industry. Potential strategies include, conducting seminars, sponsoring conferences and publishing articles in targeted magazines. Their success in accomplishing these would create heightened brand awareness and their possibility of becoming the hub of and for research within the UK.

In terms of the approach to the opportunities available, it is proposed that Scott Wilson Research Consultancy adopt a dedicated marketing plan targeting in the first instance the key funders addressed within this document, then a wider Government market.

It is also proposed that they acquire additional valuable resources in terms of human capital to provide essential support to the Research Division in order for key individuals to focus on the broader strategic and marketing plans for the Company.

It is also proposed that they continue to build on alliances, joint ventures or partnerships with other firms where they can leverage on their competencies in order to perform high profile projects which would enhance their brand image.
