Abstract

This thesis is an edition of the selected letters of Thomas Campbell (1777-1844). Campbell was a Scottish Romantic poet and public figure popular during his lifetime not just for his poetry, but also his various roles as lecturer, periodical editor, and Rector of the University of Glasgow, alongside his friendships with other prominent Romantic figures.

This thesis aims to present a scholarly edition of 80 of Campbell’s letters and by so doing to offer new information about his life, his works, and his contributions to Romantic period culture, at a moment when interest in Campbell is showing signs of reviving. The thesis is structured as follows. Chapter One focuses on Campbell’s correspondence: it discusses the function of Campbell’s letters, his recipients, the materiality of the letter, and explains the rationale for this edition. Chapter Two examines Campbell’s critical reputation and how it has changed over the two centuries since his literary debut in 1799.

These chapters are followed by my edition of 80 letters by Campbell. These letters have been identified in archives worldwide, transcribed, and edited by myself. Letters have been chosen which variously demonstrate Campbell’s involvement in social networks; which span his life detailing key events; which provide information contributing to wider understanding of his life and works or the Romantic period in general; and those uncommon in his surviving corpus of correspondence. The edition is supported by a scholarly apparatus that includes: my editorial methodology, explanatory footnotes, and a Biographical Index with information about Campbell’s correspondents included in my edition. An Appendix to the thesis contains a detailed list of all 1481 letters written by Campbell which I have discovered over the course of this project.
