Abstract

The challenge to lead a FTSE 100 procurement function came unexpectedly. I had a choice. I either pass this life-long ambition to change how we spend the company’s money or leave my MBA without completing my dissertation. I decided to take-on both.

The MBA dissertation gave me an opportunity to put my knowledge into direct action. The broad learning has put me in a stronger position to see through the changes needed.

International Airlines Group, S.A. (IAG) is a new company. Now is the time, I thought, to re-shape the group’s buying culture and attitude across its 65,000 employees.

This paper seeks to use and develop Kotter’s (1996) eight-steps to transforming an organisation and Sirkin et al’s (2005) Duration, Integrity, Commitment and Effort (DICE) framework; against a backdrop of three airlines that are in three different stages of the business cycle (growth, maturity and transformation). McKinsey’s 7S model helps frame the content of what is moving and how to align the new 7S’s for the future?

This paper will test the relevance and impact of the two above mentioned change theories within a large-scale organisation.

Lastly, I then compare my own style using Dunphy and Stace’s (1994) Matrix.
